My Family’s Homemade Sourdough Bread Recipe
A beginner-friendly recipe to make your own natural, homemade, gut-healthy sourdough bread.
The aroma of freshly baked sourdough can enchant any home with its tangy, chewy allure. Contrary to modern skepticism about bread and gluten, the real issue lies in the type of yeast used. Our daily ritual involves a three-day process using a refrigerated starter, which you can also keep on the counter, treating it like a pet—feeding and tending to it daily to maintain its freshness.
  • 5 cups organic, unbleached flour
  • 1 T Redmond Real Salt
  • 2 cups spring water
  • 1 cup starter
    1. Feed your starter with 1 part water to 1 part flour
    2. Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl until dough has formed and is easy to handle (it should not be sticky)
    3. Dampen a linen or cotton cloth and place it over the bowl to rise overnight
    4. The next day, preheat oven to 425 degrees F with Dutch oven inside
    5. Divide dough into 2 loaves and roll into balls
    6. With a perforated knife, cut an “x” on the top
    7. Rub gently with olive oil and sprinkle with salt
    8. Take Dutch oven out of the oven and brush it with olive oil
    9. Place bread in Dutch oven and bake with lid on for 20 minutes
    10. Remove lid, lower oven temperature to 400 degrees F, and bake additional 20 minutes until golden brown
    11. Let cool on a baking rack, slice, and enjoy!
